Generally there are a few steps you must go through before you can hire a helium tank for your event.  You are more than likely to come up with a security deposit before your helium tank hire can take place.  The rental place will want some assurance you will return the helium tank after you are done.  Normally they will charge your credit card $50 or make a authorization for such amount, much like car hire places.

There maybe delivery and pickup charges associated with your hire as well.  If the location is close enough and the tank is small enough, it probably makes sense to go and physically pick it up.  Helium is not combustable like hydrogen so you must not have to worry about it and you can safely transport helium in your private car.

You must take extra caution to return the equipment after your rental period is over.  If you neglect this, the vendor might charge you for each extra day you keep the helium tank you hired.  It is like video rental places that charge you if you do not return it during your rental window. Of couse this point is mute with the introduction of netflix. There is no heliumflix for such services.

It is also your responsibility to return the helium tank without any damage after the time you hired it for.  You will be asked to pay for damanges if you make any damage their equipment.  You do not want to purchase a helium tank, when all you intended to do was rent it.

And final not of warning before you proceed with your helium tank hire: Helium is nontoxic and nonflamable but you should not breathe it directly from the tank or from the balloon.  It can be quite amusing to listen to your voice after inhaling helium, but it can be very dangerous.  This can cause permanent brain damange.  So do not mess with it.
